JUBA, 18 June, 2021 NPC South Sudan on Friday participated in a meeting organized by the Political Affairs section, United Nation Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on the permanent constitution making process. The meeting discussed the role of media in civic education and public consultation as well as the challenges, constraints for effective media role in the permanent constitution making process in the country.

The meeting resolved that the media sectors write a petition to the IGAD, AU, EU for immediate consideration and inclusion of media personnel in the constitution making process.

JUBA, 11 June, 2021- As we continue to advocate for a conducive working environment for journalists in South Sudan, NPC South Sudan management on Thursday facilitated a two days training for the Central Equatoria State government Press secretaries at Civic Engagement Center.

National Press Club South Sudan (NPC-SS) is delighted to support the ministry of information and communication of Central Equatoria in training their Press secretaries from various state ministries of information, education, State legislative assembly, health among other line ministries. The two days Training will conclude today.

According to the state Information ministry Director General Mr. Rumba Peter during the opening session said, the next refresher or the orientation will then focus on the various counties in the state. The state ministry looks forward to further engagement with NPC-SS in the effort to promote media Freedom in the state and the Countries levels.

MEDIA CAN PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THE PERMANENT CONSTITUTION MAKING PROCESS-NPC SOUTH SUDAN

JUBA, 11th May, National Press Club South Sudan (NPC-SS) on Tuesday has taken part in the two days consultative Workshop on the role of the media in the permanent Constitution-Making Process in South Sudan organized by UNESCO, UN Women and UNMISS.

“NPC believe media can play a key role in the process of this permanent constitution making process”, said NPC South Sudan representative.

The two days’ consultative workshop under the theme” Supporting south Sudan’s peace Building process towards a legitimate and effective constitutional framework at Palm Africa Hotel, Juba.

NPC South Sudan Calls on Authorities in South Sudan to ensure freedom of expression is respected

Ochaya James Philip, Executive Director of National Press Club South Sudan, speaking on Monday ahead of World Press Freedom Day in Juba.

 

JUBA, 3rd May, the executive director of National Press Club South Sudan, Mr. Ochaya James, on Monday has urged the authorities in the country to ensure freedom of expression is respected. Mr. Ochaya made the call during the world press freedom Day in Juba.

“We call on the government and all other authorities to ensure freedom of expression is respected in every part of the society”, Ochaya James Philip, Executive Director of National Press Club South Sudan, speaking on Monday ahead of World Press Freedom Day in Juba.

The World Press Freedom day 2021, kicked off in South Sudan today with a series of webinar discussions under the theme “Information As A Public Good”. The event was attended by media stakeholders and partners in South Sudan.

The panelists will discuss three main topics on, Understanding Information as Public Good, Media Independence and sustainability and Legal and Policy overview. NPC South Sudan is happy to be part of this year’s event.

Today, 8th April, 2021 the executive director of NPC South Sudan Mr. Ochaya James Philip, Juma Peter of AMDISS and Irena Irene, acting principal of Media Development Institute MDI met the Managing Director of Media Authority, Elijah Alier Kuai at the MA’s new office along the Gumbo-Sharikat road.

The meeting covered a wide range of issues related to freedom of expression, access to information, and how best a vibrant media could be realized in South Sudan.

Mr. Ochaya who is also a co-chair in the committee of  the world press Freedom Day Also separately met the Central Equatorial State Minister of Information, Hon. Paulino Lukudu in his office at the EBC complex. The committee meeting had a discussion on the forthcoming World Press Freedom Day under the global theme “information as a public good.”

NPC South Sudan takes part in the preparatory meeting of the world press Freedom Day 3rd May

Today, 7th April, 2021 the Executive Director of National Press Club NPC-South Sudan Mr. Ochaya James Philip, together with the other two members of the NPC-SS Secretariat participated in a joint meeting Organized by AMDISS and UNESCO ahead of the World Press Freedom Day on 3rd May, 2021. Today’s meeting at AMDISS is a preparatory meeting by the media Organizations to celebrate the world Press Freedom Day.

Besides, NPC-SS will take part in the preparation of the event as one of the registered media Organization in the Country. The meeting ended today and will continue next week with the breakdown of activities that will be gathered from the media representatives.

“NPC-SS is not only taking part but is the co-chair for the organization of the event and taking lead in all the proposal and budget drafting for the event as well as taking lead in meeting the stakeholders like Media Authority, Ministry of information both National and Central Equatoria, Access to information commission and others”, said Mr. Ochaya, the Executive Director on Wednesday.

NPC-SS is encouraged and has appreciated the good partnership with UNESCO and AMDISS in regards to the media development in the country.

Mr. Bullen Keny Yatta Wani is a veteran South Sudanese journalist. He had worked with various media organizations since 2000.

Educationally, he has a diploma in theology and obtained a number of certificates in the teaching profession. From 2002 to 2016, he attended various courses on election reporting, political reporting, human rights. He however visited countries in the region on a skill-sharing mission.

He previously served as a court observer and worked in other government offices as a communication officer and trainer of trainees on basic journalism skills and code of conduct.

He co-founded the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS).

 

He visited Norway, Japan, and Turkey for journalism conferences where he seized the opportunities to drum up support for the development of the media industry in the world’s youngest nation. He speaks English and Arabic.

النادي الوطني للصحافة بجنوب السودان

مقدمة

النادي الوطني للصحافة بجنوب السودان هي منظمة إعلامية غير ربحية وغير حكومية، تعمل كمنصة يلتقي فيها الصحفيون المحليون والدوليون العاملون في جنوب السودان لمشاركة خبراتهم وتحدياتهم وتقدمهم وكذلك المساعدة في ضمان ديمقراطيات صحية من خلال الممارسة المهنية لوسائل الإعلام، وتعزيز الشفافية في الشؤون العامة، وزيادة الوعي العام بقضايا التنمية الهامة، فضلاً عن تسهيل النقاش والتبادل الديناميكي للمعلومات والأفكار.

تعد مشاركة النادي الوطني للصحافة ضرورية لتعزيز ظهور العاملين في وسائط الإعلام من خلال ممارسة أنشطتهم وتعزيز الثقة المتبادلة في ظل تراجعها في سائل الإعلام. يسعى نادي الصحافة للعمل مع الصحفيين والصحفيين المستفليين والعاملين في مجال الإعلام بصفتهم ناشرين للمعلومات، والكشف عن قضايا حقوق الإنسان والفساد والعنف القائم على النوع الاجتماعي.

كما يسعى النادي للتعاون مع الصحفيين والإعلاميين للوصول إلى مجموعة واسعة من أصحاب المصلحة للدفاع عن حرية الصحافة والوصول إلى المعلومات. ويهدف النادي إلى تشكيل الرأي العام من خلال معالجة فجوة المعلومات، وكشف وتصحيح المعلومات المضللة ومحاربة الأخبار الكاذبة التي تتسلل في معظم الحالات إلى الجمهور وتسبب الصراع بين المجتمعات.

الفوائد المحتملة لإنشاء نادي الوطني للصحافة كبيرة؛ فهي لا تدعم فقط تمكين الصحفيين والإعلاميين للعمل من أجل تحفيز الحوكمة الرشيدة والتنمية المستدامة، بل إنها تعزز آفاقًا جديدة من التعاون والتآزر مع نوادي الصحافة في المنطقة والعالم بأسره عبر التواصل وتبادل المعلومات، والتعاون بين الصحفيين. ومن شأن هذه الشبكة أيضًا أن تسهل الوصول إلى الجمهور وتوعيته بالقضايا المتعلقة بحرية الصحافة والوصول إلى المعلومات.

تم إنشاء النادي الوطني للصحافة بموجب قانون الإعلام في جنوب السودان لعام ٢٠١٣م الذي ينص على: (ن) يحق للصحفيين تكوين جمعيات مهنية وتعزيز المهنية من خلال التدريب والتعليم وإعداد دليل أخلاقيات المهنة والدعوة إلى استقلالية التحرير، وضمان حقوق الصحفيين وحقوق الإعلام المستقل دون تدخل؛

وفوق كل ذلك، يكمل نادي الصحافة الجهود التي تبذلها المؤسسات الإعلامية الأخرى لإنشاء وسائل إعلام ذات ثقة وحيوية في جنوب السودان. ومع ذلك، فقد تم إنشاء النادي الوطني للصحافة لمعالجة التحديات التي تواجه الصحفيين والمساعدة في خلق بيئة عمل مواتية للصحفيين المحليين والدوليين والمستقلين.

الرسالة: العمل لصالح الصحفيين الوطنيين والدوليين، وتنمية مهاراتهم، والدفاع عن حقوقهم وفقًا للمادة 19 من الإعلان العالمي لحقوق الإنسان (الحق في حرية التعبير والرأي)، والتأسيس لوجود إعلامي قوي ومستدام وحيوي في جنوب السودان.

الرؤية: تحقيق بيئة مواتية للصحفيين وصناع الأفلام والإعلاميين مثل المحررين وأمناء الصحافة في جمهورية جنوب السودان.

القيم المشتركة: صحافة حرة ومستقلة وذات موضوعية في جنوب السودان.

الأهداف: جمع الصحفيين العاملين في وسائل الإعلام معًا من أجل التطوير المهني

Mr. Ochaya James Philip is a South Sudanese national born in Agoro, Magwi County Eastern Equatoria State. He started his Journalistic work at Mega FM 102 as a presenter in 2012 in Gulu Uganda and he was also a co-founder and managing editor of 99.3 Sama FM in Juba-South Sudan from 2014 to 2016. He also founded a National Organization called Community Development Initiative (CDI) in 2016 Juba South Sudan.

Mr. James served as a protection advisor at the national sub-GBV-cluster in Juba, and the initiative is headed by UNFPA. He is working as a safety and protection officer for the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) from 2018- 2021.

Mr. James participated in several baseline surveys initiated by the WFP and FAO from 2015 to 2016. He obtained a professional Diploma in Journalism and media management from Gulu University in Uganda.

He holds a diploma in project planning and management from Gulu Institute of Management as well as an advanced certificate in Medicine and Public Health in Lira Health Institute.

Besides Uganda where he studied mostly, he has toured Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, and United Kingdom. Mr. James served as media cluster coordinator for South Sudan Human Right Defender Network, SSHRDN, and a member of the steering committee from 2018 to 2021.  He is a full member of the Uganda union of Journalists, a full member of Journalist Right Network Uganda.

He speaks very good English and Arabic fairly.
