Sept. 17, 2021 (Yei) The National Press Club South Sudan with the support from UNESCO on Friday concluded two days in house training for Access Radio journalists in Yei River County Central Equatoria State. The training aimed at enhancing the capacity of journalists of community radio on gender reporting and safety for journalists in the media.

The two days capacity building training covered a range of topics such as basic journalism, code of conduct and ethics of journalists, gender responsive reporting and protection of gender journalists in the media.

In her closing remarks, Sympathy Michael, NPC South Sudan Communication officer thanked the participants for their active participation in the two days training.

Make a lot of sacrifices to achieve your goal. Go out to the field, get stories. Be consistent in your work”, said Sympathy Michael, NPC South Sudan Communication officer on Friday during her closing remark.

Access Radio being a new station is one of the community radios that has benefited from the capacity building.

The Station manager of Access Radio, Mr. Tindi Lavrick, station manager Access has thanked NPC for building the capacity of their journalists on gender sensitive reporting and safety of their journalists while covering stories.

“We are pleased that NPC has conducted the first training with us to enable us to create big change in the community. Access radio is always ready to address the issues of gender within the community”, said Mr. Tindi Lavrick, station manager Access.

The workshop is part of UNESCO efforts to strengthen capacities of media decision-makers, practitioners, and civil-society groups to support SDG 5 through improved gender and youth representation and portrayal in the media as well as build awareness and capacities of the journalists on gender sensitive reporting.

“Thank you for coming to train us on journalism. I found it interesting and learnt a lot because I didn’t do any journalism training on journalism. Now with this little knowledge. My recommendation, next time come and provide us with certificates”, Winnie Gaba, Access Radio Journalist who participated in the training.

Kepa Benjamin, Access radio Journalist stated that “This is fruitful training. I am satisfied with the knowledge. Next time if there is a chance of training, we need you NPC- to come up with an app or gadgets to enable us to learn much about digital security”.
